Service Delivery
In Florida individuals with moderate and severe injuries who are hospitalized or otherwise seen by a physician or representative of a public or private health or social agency are referred to the Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program within the Department of Health. After a referral is made, the individual will be referred to a case manager or Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program Nurse, who will assist in determining eligibility for services. Individuals who are 18 and younger are referred to the Children Medical Services Nurse case managers for services under a Memorandum of Agreement with the Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Program. Any individual sustaining a TBI, regardless of age, is referred to the Central Registry.
Services provided are paid for by the Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Trust Fund, a payer of last resort. Services are provided through State designated and approved facilities and include acute care, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, transitional living services, adaptive equipment, home modifications, and other services necessary for community reintegration. The program has divided the State into five regions housing regional supervisors, case managers, rehabilitation technicians, and support personnel. Children's Medical Services is also aligned with the program. Individuals who are Medicaid eligible may receive services provided through the Medicaid Home and Community- Based Waiver program.
The Medicaid Waiver services include adaptive health and wellness, assistive technology, attendant care services, behavioral programming, community support coordination, companion services, consumable medical supplies, life skills training, environmental accessibility adaptation, personal adjustment counseling, personal care services, and rehabilitative engineering evaluation.
