The Social Security Administration was created in 1935 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law. Its mission is to advance the economic security of the nation's people through compassionate and vigilant leadership in shaping and managing America's Social Security programs. It pays retirement, disability and survivors benefits to workers and their families and administers the Supplemental Security Income program. It also issues Social Security numbers.
