Maintaining the Supported Employment and Projects with Industry (PIC) programs within the Rehabilitation Act.
Ensuring that WIA One Stop Programs are accessible physically and programmatically to individuals with disabilities.
Overview
The Workforce Investment Act, known as WIA, is a community-based workforce development system that is designed to provide job seekers with the skills necessary to meet the needs of local employers. Many individuals with disabilities could also greatly benefit from the employment and training services delivered through the WIA one-stop system.
The reauthorization of the WIA also includes the reauthorization of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act, which provides training, job placement and employment for individuals with disabilities. NASHIA favors (a) maintaining the Supported Employment and Projects with Industry programs within the Rehabilitation Act, (b) an assurance that WIA One Stop Programs are accessible physically and programmatically to individuals with disabilities, particularly individuals with cognitive disabilities, and (c) strong linkages between Vocational Rehabilitation, WIA, Ticket to Work, and Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA).
