NASHIA supports:

Funding to State health departments to support injury surveillance, interagency coordination, and community outreach to reduce the incidence of traumatic brain injury each year.

Traffic safety programs and incentives for State mandatory laws requiring (1) motorcycle helmet usage for all riders, (2) primary safety belt usage, (3) prohibition of open containers of alcohol in vehicles, and (4) strong DUI or DWI laws.

Prevention

Overview

Motor vehicle related injuries are the primary cause of traumatic brain injury with falls, assaults/weapons, occupational and sporting injuries also contributing causes and are preventable. Further, quick response and appropriate treatment at the time of injury can prevent secondary brain injuries.

NASHIA supports funding to State health departments for injury surveillance and data collection; interagency coordination; and outreach to the community to support prevention education and strategies for reducing the number of traumatic brain injuries that occur each year.

NASHIA supports funding to State health departments to maintain and improve trauma care including Emergency Medical Services and Emergency Medical Services for Children.

NASHIA also supports traffic safety programs and incentives to States to encourage (a) mandatory laws requiring motorcycle helmet usage for all riders, (b) primary safety belt laws, (c) open container laws, and (d) strong DUI or DWI laws.
